HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C: Choosing a Monitor Connection

Connectivity guide illustration

The best monitor cable is the one that both devices fully support. Connector names alone do not tell the whole story because ports and cables can belong to different generations. Start with the display mode you want, then find a connection supported by the computer, monitor and cable together.

Define the display target

Note the monitor resolution and the refresh rate you intend to use. A basic productivity display is less demanding than a high-resolution or high-refresh screen. The required bandwidth rises as resolution, refresh rate and colour requirements increase.

When HDMI makes sense

HDMI is common across monitors, televisions, laptops and game systems. It is often the most convenient choice when both devices expose matching ports. Check the supported HDMI version and display mode rather than assuming every HDMI cable and port handles the same maximum output.

When DisplayPort makes sense

DisplayPort is widely used on desktop monitors and graphics cards. It is often a practical choice for PC displays, especially where higher refresh rates or particular monitor features are required. As with HDMI, the supported generation at both ends determines the available modes.

When USB-C makes sense

USB-C can simplify a laptop desk by carrying display data and, with compatible equipment, other functions through one connection. The source port must support video output, and a monitor or dock must support the same connection method. Charging through a monitor is a separate feature and should be checked independently.

Adapters and conversion

An adapter can bridge different connector types, but it cannot create capabilities beyond the source output. Direction matters on some adapters, and demanding display modes require an adapter with appropriate specifications. For the simplest troubleshooting, use a direct cable where practical.

Quick buying checklist

  • Record the monitor’s resolution, refresh rate and available inputs.
  • Check the computer or graphics output specification.
  • Match the cable or adapter to the required display mode.
  • Confirm adapter direction and USB-C video support where applicable.
  • Prefer a direct, comfortably sized cable for a permanent desk.
